How do dermatology residency programs work?
Dermatology training includes the completion of four years of postgraduate medical training before moving on to dedicated residency programs.
Dermatological courses have a short training period of 3 years on average.
The specialty is one of the most competitive in the United States. The average USMLE level 1 score of those who correspond to the major is 248, while the average USMLE level 2CK score is 256.

How to be accepted into a Senior Dermatology Residency Program
To gain admission to major residency programs, you must submit a competitive application through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service.
This is a centralized online application service that you must use to "match" the above programs.
Most programs begin reading applications in the early fall/fall weeks and invite applicants for an interview in the following weeks.
Generally, applications for the dermatology residency program include the following:
- A complete ERAS application
- personal statements
- Supplementary statement(s) (if requested)
- Letters of recommendation from dermatologists (usually after theReflexformat)
- A complete official medical school transcript.
- Your USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Transcripts
- Medical Student Performance Assessment (MSPE)
Eligibility criteria are specific to each program, but applicants are generally evaluated based on a combination of qualifications, clinical and research experience, special interests, and anything else the surgical departments/programs deem relevant.
